NYE @ BTWN

You in Bloomington (Indiana) for New Years Eve?? Still deciding whether you want to kick it at home or get out and celebrate with some friends (and maybe a few strangers!) Here are my picks for top events to check out in town!

1. THE REVEREND PEYTON’S BIG DAMN BAND @ The Bluebird (9 PM)

If you’ve never seen or heard The Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band, and you like music that is fun, energy-fulled, and are open to the genres of blues, country, and rockabilly, The Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band NYE show at the Bluebird is for you. I first saw this band over 5 years ago during my freshmen year of college. They played in a small open space at the student union and I remember being captivated by their style. I saw the band again back in 2008 at the Lotus World Music and Arts Festival in Bloomington where they had an entire tent jumping, dancing, clapping, and singing the sun down to their rootsy, bluesy tunes.

Also Performing: Carpenter and Clerk

2. The Vallures @ The Bishop (10 PM)

Oh, The Vallures. Normally, I would never suggest that you spend your evening (and your cash) to see a cover band, however, The Vallures provide an excellent exception to that rule. Filled with some of Bloomington most talented musical ladies (and one gentleman), The Vallures bring you 60’s style doo-wop all the way with custom vintage fashion, hairstyles, attitude and musicianship.

Also Playing: DJ Bongo

3. Davy Jay Sparrow, Payton Purnell @ Max’s Place (9 PM)

I never thought I’d be one for country and honky-tonk music, but then I met musicians like Davy Jay Sparrow and the fellows of Payton Purnell who truly dedicate themselves to the craft, making excellent, authentic, original tunes, and creating fresh experiences out of old standards. This show is guaranteed to be a good time, especially if you like to sing, shout, and dance.

Also Performing: Scrapper & Blackwell

Those are my top picks, but here are some other choice alternatives:

International MusicAfro Hoosier International and Istanbul Breez @ Cafe Django

The “older crowd“: The Dynamics @ Player’s Pub

The “all-ages aka under-age” crowd: Xenosound, Thorr-Axe, & ‘Til the Seas Run Dry @ Rhino’s All-Ages Club

Comedy:  Bob & Tom All Star Mike MacRae @ Comedy Attic
