If you have been following me on Twitter, you may have noticed quite a few posts lately about an online auction. If you haven’t checked it out yet, PLEASE DO IT! This is an amazing effort put together by Bloomington concert promotion company Spirit of ’68 Promotions, with the help and support of indie musicians and labels, to help raise funds for a dear friend of mine and his newborn son.
When it comes to local music in Bloomington, there are so many amazing bands, but the first to really catch my attention was husband&wife. Ever since I first saw the band in 2006, I have become a devout fan and friend to the band, as well as a supporter of its independent label, Crossroads of America Records. Mike Adams, who provides vocals, songwriting and guitar for the band (as well as projects such as Mike Adams at His Honest Weight, Prayer Breakfast, and temporary drummer for Tammar) has been someone I not only always look forward to seeing, but have looked up to for many years. Just before the new year rang in, Mike and his wife Jessica welcomed their first child into this world; a beautiful baby boy named Asa. And let me tell you, this kid is cute! Unfortunately, this wonderful exciting time came with instant fears as it was found that Asa had a severe heart defect. He spent the first month of his life getting three open-heart surgeries.
It’s a frightening experience to have your newborn child going through such intense surgery, but Mike and Jessica held on strong, as did their son, who is now healthy and making us all smile doing his cute (and even not-so-cute) baby things. However, those surgeries and hospital ordeals are not cheap. This is where the community stepped in to create an amazing opportunity to help them out. There is an online auction up now until the evening of April 8, and the bidding wars are in full effect. What’s up for grabs? Everything from concert tickets to recording studio time, prize bundles and rare test pressings of albums from artists such as Damien Jurado, Bon Iver, Tallest Man on Earth, of Montreal, Sufjan Stevens, Deerhoof, Vampire Weekend, and SO MANY MORE!
I’m telling you, the items available are amazing, and the list of contributors is only growing. It makes me extremely proud to live in a community where people and friends are so willing to help out in a time of need, and put something like this together. ANYONE living ANYWHERE can place a bid, so if you are strapped for cash at the moment, help us spread the word to anyone who may be interested and able to help!
Also, for people in the Bloomington area, there is a benefit concert at The Bishop ($5 minimum donation) this Sunday, April 8. **Update: The online auction has been extended and will now close on April 30, 2012.
Please take the time to help out! This is a great cause, helping an amazing family that has given so much to this and many other communities! Even Pitchfork is spreading the word!
