New Music: “Roll Around” – The Khanz

A great experience abroad changes a person. It doesn’t matter how long or short your visit is, connecting with another world gives you a personal attachment that lasts a lifetime. I’m convinced Sydney, Australia is my spirit animal and I love keeping tabs on the bands I was introduced to during my time there (and some even after I left!)

Sydney band, The Khanz, have just released “Roll Around“, the first single from their upcoming, yet-to-be-titled, debut album. “Roll Around” takes its cue from the realization of how impulse and desire can take over clear thinking. Sometimes we just get in over our heads. Of course, The Khanz deliver this message in their upbeat electro-pop-rock hybrid style which includes adorable dance-worthy beats, chilling vocal harmonies, and well-balanced use of keyboards and guitars. The band’s new album is currently in production, but in the meantime you can enjoy “Roll Around” via SoundCloud, Spotify, or iTunes.

New Song: e.p. hall – “The Voice That Burns is Mine”

It’s always been a constant waiting game with former Bloomington songstress e.p. hall. Pulled between her commitments to both academia and songwriting, muse Elise Percy was either locked away in post-graduate studies or on tour with whichever talented bandmates she could round up. Now, her studies have taken her far from Bloomington to Ontario, Canada and just when we thought we’d heard the last from her before another scholarly seclusion, Percy announced the free download of a new song “The Voice That Burns is Mine” on Halloween. New Music: Sleeping Bag “Women of Your Life” LP, “Walk Home” Single

“Indie slackers”, “bedroom rock”, there have been a lot of terms thrown around to describe Bloomington rock trio Sleeping Bag, but they all basically attempt to outline the same aspects of the band’s sound: Dave Segedy’s somber vocals, and the band’s simplistic and steady musical vibe. Sleeping Bag’s music is to be taken as it is, no crazy embellishments just straightforward garage rock.

The band’s debut release Sleeping Bag has generated an impressive amount of positive press from all directions, and a little over a year later, a follow-up has been announced. Expect the new LP Women of Your Life to hit shelves, digital stores, and probably your mailbox on November 27 via Joyful Noise. The “double mint”-green vinyl includes 10 new tracks including new single “Walk Home” which debuted on Spin yesterday, hand-numbered, silk-screened jackets (artwork by John Stortz), and is limited to only 300 copies. Pre-order your copy now. And listen to the new single while you wait. Download “Walk Home” at

New Music: “Eastern Ride” – Alexander The Great

Bloomington’s favorite basement band Alexander The Great has been relatively silent since calling it quits in 2011 and releasing its last recording, Native Tongues via mail. With many of its members focusing on new musical, academic, and professional endeavors, it came as a surprise to me this evening to find a new single on the band’s bandcamp site.

Eastern Ride” was released this evening via the interwebs and is a slow-burning, trance-like song. Opening with a steady percussion that on first listen prompts thoughts of a Hall & Oates cover, the song calmly progresses adding keyboard, guitar, and then a low-bearing vocal that is very reminiscent of Spirit Spine. Who knows if more is to come, but in the meantime, we can all enjoy this little treat with nostalgia and light hearts. The track is available for download at a “pay-what-you-want” rate, so go get it!

*An instrumental version of this track (titles “Winter Is Coming”) is now available on the Flannelgraph Records holiday compilation, The Holidays Don’t Have To Be So Rotten, Volume Three, which features a record 34 original holiday-inspired instrumental tunes by local and regional musicians (and a few extras). Check it out, all proceeds raised this year will be donated to Middle Way House!

New Music: “On The Canvas” – The Broderick

In an attempt to convince me that the band will actually release an album next month, local indie rockers The Broderick released a new track today from its (supposedly) upcoming album The Broderick. Check out “On The Canvas” on bandcamp.

The Broderick plans to release its much-anticipated debut album on October 25; and album release show will be held at The Bishop that evening with musical guests The Kernal.
