Best of 2012: Drummers in the Front

Looking back at 2012, a trend I seemed drawn to in the local scene was that of drummers in bands boldly stepping out from being simply the “rhythm keeper in back”. Sure, multi-instrumentalists have been out there forever, but this year more and more drummers either put aside their sticks to release new musical projects playing anything but the drums, swapped instruments in new bands, or fronted the band from the set. New Music: “Lucky A Hundred Times” – Kalispell

With the release date for Westbound a little over a month away, Wisconsin folk project Kalispell is getting antsy. The band has announced pre-orders for the album this week, which can be purchased on its bandcamp page. While there, listeners can check out “Lucky A Hundred Times“, the first single from the album, which is currently available for a free listen and download.

To sweeten the deal, those who pre-order Westbound will receive a free download of the Last Year EP.

Westbound is set for release on May 17.

Kalispell Announces Album Release Date

The best news came this week as Kalispell, the alt-folk band that swept me away last year, finally announced that a full-length album, Westbound, will make its official release on May 17. The Eau Claire, Wisconsin band made quite a splash throughout the Midwest scene last year with a number of small tours, mostly taking place in houses and coffee houses. Primarily the music of songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Shane Leonard, Kalispell is a soft and heartfelt musical project that combines passionate folk lyrics with a colorful blend of piano, string instruments, and light percussion. Leonard’s steady-yet-soulful vocal delivery and image-filled lyrics top the beautiful mix, leaving listeners in an emotional trance.

I’m already in love with the three songs on Kalispell’s Last Year EP, I can’t wait for what surprises are in store for Westbound. To keep fans on their toes, the band has made a few teaser trailers:
